Princess I-cannot-remember-who, proud and cocky, thought little of everyone else. Her parents and all within her sphere made sure she didn't know any better.
By and by, Princess grew prettier and prouder until it was time to fly the nest. It was time to be married. Princes and Lords, from far and near, thronged the palace, seeking her approval, her acceptance. But Princess spat at some, laughed at some. 'You are all beneath me! Is there none in all the land and beyond as fair as I am?' she would say and saunter away to her chambers for yet another milk bath.
Month after month. Grown men, bonny and wealthy, were chewed and spat by the teeth and mouth of the hand they so sought.
Until one day.
He, sparkly-eyed, dimple-cheeked, and fair-skinned, rode into the kingdom, villagers' whispers pushing him further and further until he reached the castle gates. None fairer, none more graceful had ever been seen. The princess besotted, placed her love and her life in his hands and soon they rode away to his kingdom, leaving behind a trail of broken hearts and bitter tongues.
After five miles, the groom stopped, walked into a path and returned a while later. His teeth were gone.
'Where are your teeth?' Princess asked.
'With its owner,' said the groom.
Five miles after, the groom walked into another path. When he returned, his lips were gone.
'Where are your lips?'
'With its owner.'
Five miles after five miles, face gone, skin gone, horse gone... voice gone. Until only a skeletal frame for Princess remained.
* All that glitters isn't gold … If it is too good to be true, it most likely is.
