Meet Adaora Ogunniyi

Adaora Ogunniyi is a Nigerian novelist, short story writer, poet and flash fiction author. With a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and a career history spanning nearly two decades in corporate Human Capital Development and Customer Relationship Management, she draws inspiration for her writing from her extensive travels and interactions with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate and Masters degree in Creative Writing from the University of Oxford and the University of Hull respectively.

Adaora's writing often draws from African cultural narratives and explores themes of love, social issues, and defiance of tyranny. Some of them are listed below.

Waves Aligning: Her debut novel published by Troubador UK in 2018, tells the story of a young African girl’s travails and the imbalance in societal opportunities for the education of girls.

The Steel Gavel: Published in 2023, (Matador-UK) follows a couple whose relationship is challenged by Nigerian cultural traditions.

"Six-Feet" is a flash fiction piece published by Flash Fiction in August 2023.

"The Mist" is another flash fiction piece, published in August 2023 on Flash Fiction North.

"Missing Pipes, Nuts and Screws" is a short story published by Every Writer in May 2024

“My Name Is Adaiba” is a short story, published by Adelaide Literary Magazine, New York in June 2024. Adaora was also a finalist in the 2024 Adelaide Literary Award contest for this story.

Adaora also writes scripts for informal drama presentations and has an array of unpublished articles and stories. Born in Kaduna, Northern Nigeria, Adaora Ogunniyi is of Igbo heritage from South-Eastern Nigeria. Her childhood involved living and schooling in different parts of the country. Her other interests include swimming, singing, and trying new food recipes. A happily married mother of two children
